Simiyu names Shujaa squad for Sevens World Cup

Kenya Sevens head coach Innocent Simiyu has named a 12-man team that will take part in the upcoming 2018 Sevens World Cup in San Francisco, USA in July (20-22).

Familiar faces make up the core of the Shujaa team but Simiyu has also added a youthful touch to the squad with a number of players set to debut for the national team at the World Cup.

KCB RFC Veteran Andrew Amonde Mwamba RFC Speedster Collins Injera and Willy Ambaka make to the final cut for the second straight World Cup appearance following a 2013 appearance in Moscow.

The trio was part of the Shujaa side that was knocked out of the semifinals stage under head coach Mike Friday in 2013 who has now changed his loyalty to the USA eagle’s rugby team.

Homeboyz RFC utility Oscar Ayodi will Captain the side with Impala Saracens halfback Sammy Oliech deputising him Kenya Harlequins duo of Herman Humwa and Eden Agero, Homeboyz RFC Jeff Oluoch and Nakuru RFC winger Nelson Oyoo who all made to the Commonwealth games at the Gold Coast, Australia in April made it again to the travelling party.

All are in line for their Shujaa debut at this year’s World Cup in San Francisco.

Nondescripts RFC winger Dennis Ombachi will be delighted with the call up after missing out on the 2013 squad and the HSBC sevens series due to an injury and indiscipline issue’s.

Kabras Sugar halfback Brian Tanga and Menengai Oilers youngster Samuel Ng’ethe return to the squad after missing the London and Paris Sevens.

Record breaking try scorer Injera is in line for a third straight World Cup having debued in 2009 and is the only surviving member of the 2009 class.

Tactician Simiyu played alongside Injera and is making a comeback to yet another World Cup as the Kenya 7s head Coach.

This year’s edition tournament sees a knock-out stage qualifier with nations ranked ninth to 24th set to tackle each other, while the top eight seeds progress automatically to the round of 16.

Kenya 7s on their part have blown cold and hot moments at the World Cup having qualified for the Semifinals twice recenlty loosing12-5 to England in Cup semis after extra time before falling 29-5 to Fiji in third place playoff.

On the other hand it has enjoyed success at the HSBC World Sevens Series falling twice to Fiji in the Finals of the Vancouver and Singapore sevens.

Kenya plays Tonga in their first game in the knock-out qualifier on Friday at 11.01pm Kenyan time with the winner set to take on Scotland in the next round of 16.
