Transport on the busy Thika-Garissa road was Wednesday morning paralysed after transporters blocked the highway protesting the impounding of more than 65 lorries by the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA).

KeNHA impounded the lorries in Matuu for lack of number plates and overloading.

“This morning at 3am along the Thika-Garissa highway, the Kenya National Highway Authority intercepted 65 trucks without number plates and overloaded with sand.

The trucks were being escorted with a private vehicle indicating it was an organised activity,” said KeNHA’s road asset and corridor management director Njuguna Gatiti.

“This is not the first time such an incident has happened but with the introduction of road protection, KeNHA was able to impound these vehicles.”

Virtual weighbridge

The KeNHA plans to set up 10 virtual weighbridges on key transport corridors to clamp down on overloaded trucks that damage Kenyan highways.

The electronic devices expected to be operational by end of June will be located at Kibera on the Nairobi Southern By-pass, Mayoni on the Mumias-Bungoma road, Moi’s Bridge on the Eldoret-Kitale road, Ahero on the Mau Summit-Kisumu road and Mwatate on the Voi-Taveta road.

Other will be at Sagana Bridge on the Thika-Nyeri road, Archers Post on Isiolo-Moyale road, Kamulu on the Nairobi-Kangundo road, Yatta on the Thika-Garissa road, and Eldama Ravine on the Ravine-Eldoret road.
