Kirinyaga cautions investors on ‘trust’ land fraud cartels

Kirinyaga County has warned local and international investors that it has no trust land up for sale. The county administration said unless land is on sale from individuals with proof of ownership, the land deals are fraudulent. Deputy governor Peter Ndambiri said there are “groups of fraudsters in the county who have for the past 10 years been collecting money from unsuspecting people with the promise that they own land through shares.” “What we have are land brokers sanctioned by legal owners of private land to seek buyers. But the moment you are told that there is land to be subdivided into shareholdings, be careful,” he said. The county said the fraudsters mainly target the 54,000 acres of Mwea trust land. The former chairman of the defunct Kirinyaga county council, Jeremiah Gateri, said the land is now privately owned and is in the process of being given to its rightful owners. “They also lay claim to the 28,000 acres of South Ngariama land which has since been subdivided and allocated to its rightful owners,” he said. “We have not registered any group to buy and sell land in ranching arrangements. We have been going round our county warning people not to be trapped in this fraud,” Mr Ndambiri said. “We will not be liable if one ignored our alert.”
