A man who had been accused of raping and killing a 69-year-old woman has committed suicide while in the hands of police officers.

Benard Nyambok died after jumping off a moving police vehicle near River Arujo along Rongo-Homa Bay Road in Homa-Bay town constituency.

The 30-year-old, who had been arrested at Magina village in the neighboring Ndhiwa constituency on Tuesday evening, sustained fatal injuries after breaking his skull on the road.

Nyambok was allegedly found masquerading as a public health officer defrauding residents of their money by threatening to arrest them over failure to abide by some sanitation requirements.

The suspect had previously been arraigned at the Homa Bay High Court over the incident that occurred in September 2016 and was out on bond.

In December 2017, he is said to have broken into a guest house in the same village where he stole various valuable items.

According to Homa Bay DCIO Joseph Tuksho, Nyambok went into hiding and the court had issued several warrants of arrest against him.

The DCIO says the suspect had decided to defy court orders and could no longer attend hearing of any of the cases.

The body was taken to Homa Bay Hospital Mortuary.
