All set for weekend’s Madoka Half Marathon

Philadelphia Half Marathon champion Panuel Mkungo will lead other elite athletes in the 13th edition of the Safaricom Madoka half marathon race on Saturday, at Ngerenyi in Wundanyi Constituency, Taita Taveta County.

Panuel, born and raised in Taita arrived in the country three weeks ago from Philadephia and joined the Kapsabet training camp for the race preparations.

He was set to travel to Mwatate on Thursday October 11, to acclimatize with the local environment in the eight days of countdown to the race.

Defending champions Isaac Kipkoech and Vienna City Marathon winner Nancy Kiprop have already confirmed their participation.

Patrick Koech, Celine Chipchirchir Fredrick Kiptoo and Naomi Chelagat are some of the other elite athletes expected to feature in marathon which targets 3,000 participants.

Athletics Kenya (AK) coast chairman Dimmy Kisalu has meanwhile confirmed all is set for the event.

“I’m glad to confirm everything is ready. We have identified and marked routes which will be used by athletes. The Kenya police Service will provide security being assisted by other security firms.

“Weare expecting athletes from every part of the country thus we kicked off preparations early,” offered Kisalu.

Winners of the 21km in each category (both men and women) will take home KSh.500,000 each with  second finishers bagging Ksh.250,000 each.

Apart from the main race, other categories such as the 12km, 8km for people aged over 45 years, and 6km for juniors, have been included.

The main races will start at 8:00am at the Ngerenyi Trading Center in Mwatate where athletes will pass through Kidaya Primary School, Soko mjinga, Ngerenyi University, Kungu, Mbengonyi, Mlawa, Taita Teachers Sacco, Wundanyi Town, Wundanyi Bridge, Mwangeka Secondary cruising Wasinyi.
