A woman was arraigned at the Thika Law Courts and charged with child neglect and denial of basic rights.
Faith Nyokabi, 25, appeared before Principal Magistrate Omondi Otieno, but she denied that on July 31, 2018 at Kiganjo area of Thika West, she deserted her four months old baby and demanded Sh100, 000 from her husband to breastfeed the baby for only one year.
Nyokabi was arrested by officers from Makongeni Police Station after her husband of three years, Charles Kirii, sued her for demanding payment to fulfill her parental duties.
The baby’s health deteriorated since Kirii, a casual labourer, could not raise the amount demanded and was forced to take the baby to his mother who used powdered milk as a substitute.
He further complains of collaboration between his wife and her mother of a plan to extort him.
Nyokabi is said to have fled her matrimonial home and the husband reported the matter to the local sub-chief, who in turn referred him to Makongeni OCS before reporting the matter at Thika Children’s Office.
The office asked that Nyokabi be arrested for contravention of the child’s rights under the Constitution barring a medical condition on the part of the mother.
Nyokabi was released on a cash bail of Sh30, 000. The case will be mentioned on August 15.
