The three finalist included Senior Counsel Lucy Kambuni, Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor (DCPP)Jacob Ondari and Noordin Haji as presented to President Uhuru. “I have conveyed to the National Assembly the nomination for vetting and approval of Justice Paul Kihara Kariuki as Attorney General; and Noordin Mohamed Haji as Director of Public Prosecutions,” Uhuru stated. The selection panel said it considered regional balance, ethnic diversity and gender balance in shortlisting the candidates. Without a substantive DPP, suspects of various crimes could not be prosecuted as one of the functions of the DPP is to direct the police to conduct investigations before hauling a suspect to court to be charged. Should the National Assembly reject the DPP nominee, the selection panel will start a fresh recruitment. The seven-member panel consists of Kennedy Kihara (Office of the President), Maryann Njau (Attorney-General’s office) and Ms Lilian Omollo (Public Service ministry). Others are Kagwiria Mbogori (Kenya National Commission on Human Rights), Muli (Law Society of Kenya), Francis Atwoli (Central Organisation of Trade Unions) and Halakhe Waqo (Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission).
