1679 Britain’s King Charles II ratifies Habeas Corpus Act allowing prisoners right to be imprisoned to be examined by a court.

1941 Moscow is bombed by the German Luftwaffe for the first time.

1943 World War II: Battle of Prokhorovka – Russians defeat German forces in one of the largest ever tank battles.

1957 The U.S. surgeon general, Leroy E. Burney, reports that there is a direct link between smoking and lung cancer.

1962 First performance of the Rolling Stones. The British rock band performed for the first time as a group at the Marquee Club in London.

1967 Race Riots began in Newark, New Jersey, after a black cab driver was arrested and beaten by police. The end result is 24 deaths, 1,100 wounded, 1,300 arrested and property loss of more than $5 million.

1975 São Tomé and Príncipe gains independence after 200 years of Portuguese rule.

1987 The Church of England has been criticized for it’s investments in South Africa due to the countries Apartheid Policies , but they have refused to stop investing in South African companies and land.

1990 After the election of Mikhail Gorbachev as head of the Soviet Communist Party, Boris Yeltsin, president of the Republic of Russia, announces his resignation from the Soviet Communist Party.

1998 France beats Brazil to win FIFA World Cup.

1999 Following a ban by the European Union on all Beef Imports from the US over the widespread use of growth hormones which the EU believes could cause increased cancer, nerve disorders and other health problems.

2012 The International Olympic Committee has confirmed that Saudi Arabia would send two female athletes to the games for the first time ever.
2013 Ireland’s lower house in parliament voted in favor of legalizing abortion in cases where it would save the life of the mother.
