South Africa's Vice president, Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to work together with Jubilee government to strengthen the strained relationship between Kenya and South Africa. Ramaphosa who is also a close ally to NASA's principal, Raila Odinga, seized the opportunity to congratulate President Uhuru Kenyatta on his election victory. He said Uhuru's visit to South Africa demonstrated the special relations between the two countries President Uhuru Kenyatta on the evening of Friday, January 12 met with South Africa's African National Congress (ANC) leader Cyril Ramaphosa at a dinner on the eve of the party’s birthday celebration Speaking during the dinner, the ANC leader said Kenyatta’s visit to South Africa demonstrates the special relations between the two nations. “President Kenyatta’s presence here goes a long away in proving that we have a very special relationship with Kenya,” he said. In a statement seen by TUKO.coke, Ramaphosa, the Deputy President of South Africa, a former trade unionist and a wealthy businessman congratulated President Kenyatta for winning last year’s election. He explained that the opposition party, ANC and Jubilee party would work together to cement and strengthen the relations between the people of the two countries “We also welcome members of Jubilee party that have traveled with you. Their presence have extended good and warm relations between ANC and Jubilee party,” Ramaphosa said. Ramaphos's praises on President Uhuru Kenyatta has raised eyebrows since the ANC leader has been a close ally of the opposition leader Raila Odinga. Odinga’s close relationship with Ramaphosa came to the limelight after the 2007/08 post-election violence when the South African leader was proposed to mediate the Kenyan stalemate. After he took over ANC leadership, Odinga said the win by Mr Ramaphosa, who he considered a personal friend, signals a new era of democracy in Africa. Raila stated that he would restore the dignity enjoyed by South Africa which had taken a a nose dive following numerous corruption scandals involving President Zuma. “The news of our comrade Cyril Ramaphosa’s election as the leader of the African National Congress will thrill democrats in South Africa, across Africa and indeed throughout the world,” Odinga said in a statement Kenyatta is expected to give a keynote address on Pan Africanism and the role of political parties in promoting democracy in Africa during the celebrations marking 106 years of the ANC. The president was accompanied by Jubilee party leaders, Vice-Chairman David Murathe and Secretary-General Raphael Tuju. Also present were Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed and Principal Secretary Monica Juma. ALSO WATCH: Kenyans call on government to end Kenya Power's monopoly
