Sonko nominates Miguna for deputy governor

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday nominated controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna as his deputy, ending months of speculation.
In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the county assembly Beatrice Elachi, Mr Sonko said the deported opposition activist meets all the requirements provided for in the Constitution to be his deputy.
“I hereby forward my nominee, Lawyer Miguna Miguna to undergo full vetting process and approval by the county assembly for the position of deputy governor.
“The nominee meets all the requirements provided for in the Constitution, the Leadership and Integrity Act, the Elections Act and the County Government Act,” said Mr Sonko in the letter dated May 16, 2018.
The county’s deputy director of Communications Elkana Jacob confirmed the appointment.
“I can confirm that governor Mike Sonko has nominated Dr Miguna Miguna as deputy,” said Mr Elkana in a telephone interview with the Business Daily.
Shelved return to Kenya
The nomination comes barely a few hours after the firebrand lawyer shelved his plans to return to Kenya, blaming the State for refusing to issue him with a valid passport.
Mr Miguna said he would not come back as earlier planned, but would await court direction on the government's "refusal to facilitate my unconditional re-entry into Kenya."
The Immigration Department has insisted he must apply afresh for Kenyan citizenship before he can get a passport to facilitate his return, a position he has disputed.
“I was determined to arrive home on schedule, however, just before my departure, I reluctantly cancelled my flight to Nairobi and postponed my next arrival date.
We will provide you with my new arrival date as soon as the court gives further directions on this matter,” he said in a statement from Canada.
Dr Miguna’s woes started in January when the Jubilee administration intensified its crack down on those involved in the “swearing-in" of Opposition chief Raila Odinga as the “people’s president.”
