Opiyo Wandayi elected PAC chairman, Jessica Mbalu vice-chair

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi has been unanimously elected as the chairman of the powerful parliamentary Public Accounts Committee. Mr Wandayi, who is serving his serving his second term, got 15 votes out of the 18 MPs who voted beating his competitor Nambale MP Sakwa Bunyasi who got three votes. MBALU The lawmaker, who— based on his previous statements — is a thorn in the flesh of ruling Jubilee Party, on Monday said he would discharge his mandate without fear and favour. He said he would not use his position for witch-hunt but will be purely guided by the constitution. "This committee shall conduct it is business without fear or favour. With the support of other members, we shall ensure that public funds are spent well," Mr Wandayi said. Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu was elected as the vice chairperson of the committee. She asked committee members to maintain unity of purpose and avoid divisions along political lines. Mbalu garnered 11 votes, beating her competitors— Busia Woman Representative Florence and Tongaren MP Eseli Simuyu— who got five and two votes, respectively. "I want to assure members that I will let them down," Ms Mbalu said.
