McCarthy delivers brilliant response to Souness’ dig at Jose

Graeme Souness was brutally taken down by Mick McCarthy after the former Liverpool international criticised Jose Mourinho for his celebrations in Turin.

Manchester United scored two goals in the last five minutes against Juventus to come from a goal down to win 2-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The controversy came when Mourinho came onto the pitch at the final whistle and cupped his ear at the Italian club’s support.

On the incident, Mourinho said in the post-match press conference: “I didn’t offend anyone at the end, I just made a gesture that I wanted to hear them louder.

“I probably shouldn’t have done it, and with a cool head I wouldn’t have done it, but with my family insulted, including my Inter family, I reacted like this.”

"Beautiful Italians insulted me for 90 minutes…" 🤷‍♂️

Former Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy was in the Virgin Media Ireland studio with Souness to watch and analyse the match.

When asked what he thought of Mourinho’s actions, Souness said: “He could have caused a riot!”

However, McCarthy chose not to continue the criticism, but instead rounded on Souness, he said: “I don’t think you or I can sit here and pontificate on Jose Mourinho when you’ve stuck a flag in the middle of the pitch in Turkey.”

Graeme: "He could've caused a riot."

Mick: "You've stuck the flag in the middle of the pitch in Turkey!"
