Klopp to give chance to ‘probably the world’s best No. 3’

Jurgen Klopp is set to give Danny Ward an ‘opportunity’ to oust Loris Karius as Liverpool’s starting goalkeeper.

Karius’ position has been under intense scrutiny ever since he joined Liverpool in summer 2016.

He lost his place to Simon Mignolet in his first season, before eventually wrestling the spot from him last campaign.

But the German’s high-profile mistakes in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid have cast doubt on his future, with another error in pre-season not helping his case.

According to the Liverpool Echo, with the club balking at the price of viable upgrades in Alisson and Jan Oblak, they could simply look to replace Karius from within.

Ian Doyle suggests that Klopp ‘is ready to give an opportunity’ to Ward to ‘prove’ he can become the club’s first-choice keeper.

The Welshman has ‘hugely impressed’ in pre-season, and ‘could have forced his way into the box seat between the sticks’ in time for the new season.

Ward has been a ‘steady influence’, and Klopp is a known admirer of his talents.

In May, the manager declared Ward “probably the best No. 3 [goalkeeper] in the whole of world football”. So yeah.
