Kakamega County denies paying Koffi Olomide Sh23 million for performance

The County Government of Kakamega is not paying Congolese mega star Koffi Olomide Sh23 million performance fee for an event scheduled for next month, its Communications Director has revealed. Speaking to a local daily, Dickson Rayori said that even though the county was in talks with the promoters of Olomide for him to perform during the Devolution Conference, the figures were ludicrous. Rayori denied claims that the county was to pay the amount and disclosed that the promotors who are flying Olomide in were the ones footing the bill. He reiterated that the county did not invite the soukus maestro. “I can confirm that the steering committee planning the conference has been in talks with the governor’s office, but not on the alleged Sh23 million for Kofi. The county did not invite the musician, so we are not planning to pay for that service,” Mr Rayori said on phone. "Neither the Council of Governors nor the County is involved in the planning. What we know is that Koffi's promoters would collect the money at the entry at the performance venue, which has been provided by the county anyway. So it is the promoters who will make up for the Sh23 million, not us," said Rayori. This follows a query by Ford Kenya deputy party leader Boni Khalwale who had demanded answers from Governor Wycliffe Oparanya if indeed the claims were true.  “Somebody please reassure us that what is now trending on the weblogs is false. That the guy on the left (Oparanya) paid the one on the right (Koffi) Ksh 23million before the Interior Department declared the molester of women persona non grata,” wrote Khalwale. On his part, Sauti Sol musician Bien Aime did not see what the hullabaloo was about. “Good for Koffi this man has 20 albums. Koffi has done everything we have never done including entertaining three generations. Koffi deserves that kind of money.”
