Kenya Defence Forces women’s volleyball team will use their next two friendlies as a yardstick to pick a 14-member squad ahead of the 19th World Inter-Military Championship set for May 26 to June 4 in Canada.
KDF are scheduled to play the national league sides Kenya Commercial Bank and DCI this weekend in a bid to gauge the players.
The match will also act as a build up ahead of the nine-day event. KDF, who have had a one week training camp at the Makande Hall, Mombasa, qualified for the event after winning the East African Community Games title in Bujumbura, Burundi last year on their debut.
A provisional squad of 18 players under the stewardship of former national team setter and Nairobi Branch second vice chairman Elisha Aliwa, are set to resume training tomorrow after returning from the coastal trip on Monday.
Team manager Alfred Ruto said the planned two friendly matches will be used to pick the traveling party and to gauge the team’s readiness.
He said they intend to have another one week training session at either the Safaricom Indoor Arena, Kasarani or the YMCA before the team departs to the host nation on May 23. He said: “The training in Mombasa was good and we were able to tighten the lose ends.”
“We know in Canada it will be winter and that’s why we have had to have two training sessions in different regions.”
Experienced Ednah Rotich said the players are psyched up ahead of their debut.
“So far so good. The training at the coast was good and we intend to put the final touches in our remaining training sessions in Nairobi. It’s our first time as a team to participate at the worlds but we are hopeful of making a mark,” said Rotich.
