Gor Mahia FC vowed they will fight off any opposition in order to retain their Super Cup title after its organisers announced the second edition will be held from June 3-10 in Kasarani.
The Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions won the inaugural competition when they defeated AFC Leopards 3-0 in last year’s final played Uhuru Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.
That victory saw them pocket KSh3,000,000 in prize money, a glittering four-kilogram trophy as well earned them the groundbreaking right to play English Premier League side Everton FC.
‘’It is such a big honour to be given a chance to defend our title and I can assure the rest of our competitors that we shall give them a run for their money,’’ Gor Team Manager Jolawi Obondo told Citizen Digital.
The invitational eight-team tournament will contain four sides drawn from the KPL as well as an equal number of foreign teams – three from Tanzania mainland and one from Zanzibar.
Gor’s arch-rivals AFC Leopards, Kakamega Homeboyz and Kariobangi Sharks were selected for the momentous occasion while Tanzania will be represented by Yanga SC, Simba SC and Singida United.
The fourth foreign outfit will be Jeshi la Kujenga Uchumi (JKU) from Zanzibar with the prize money for the winning team retained while runners-up will take home KSh100,000.
The Second runners up will pocket Ksh 750,000 with the fourth finishers will be entitled to Ksh. 500,000. The quarter-final loosers will each get Ksh. 250,000.
Last year, Gor became the first and only KPL team to play an EPL side when they lost 2-1 and face yet an uphill task as they bid for a rematch.
