Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can access 33 African markets after Ecobank launched a networking platform for its 12.8 million customers to trade across borders. Ecobank Kenya executive director Humphrey Muturi said the platform dubbed Emerald Ecobank Business Club offers SMEs direct linkages and a seamless base for Kenyan businesses to interact with their counterparts across the continent. “As a Pan-African bank, we recognise the pivotal role that emerging businesses play in growing our business in the 33 African countries and would wish to see them grow with us,” said Mr Muturi who also heads Ecobank’s Commercial portfolio across East Africa. Ecobank Group Executive in charge of Commercial Banking, Ms Laurence Do Rego welcomed the new platform saying it will boost business to business(B2B) linkages ending fears where products or services are offered to unscrupulous traders. “A secure network could unleash vibrant and profitable value chains via B2B agreements where SMEs understand trade rules and requirements in different markets. Parties will be at liberty to seal such deals via the Ecobank Mobile App which has 4 million downloads so far,” she said. Mr Muturi said the club’s members will enjoy facilitated direct networking platforms, market information as well as business advisory services from Ecobank, associated partners, external trade facilitation and preferential banking.
