Don’t touch ‘singles only pub’ without my permission - MCA

A request by a ward rep to have a city club investigated over its choice of customers was recently debated in the Nairobi County Assembly.

Riruta Ward rep James Kiriba had asked the chairperson of Trade, Tourism and Cooperative Committee to investigate activities at the Lavington Club which operates in a residential area.

“The Club only allows entry to singles and therefore does not admit couples or anyone who is officially dressed. Chairperson should inquire and report on activities carried out there, whether it is a club, brothel or a massage parlor,” Kiriba requested.

However, the request did not go well with Kilimani MCA Moses Ogeto in whose area the club lies. Ogeto claimed he had not been consulted on the matter before it was raised in the Assembly.

Kiriba’s argument that he was raising an issue of public concern though outside his ward was drowned by other members who confronted him.

“It is a bad precedence that somebody can pick something in your Ward and say it here,” Protested Nairobi West rep Maurice Gari. Gari alleged the move was intended to solicit money but other members led by Dandora Area III rep Charles Thuo defended the request.

“When somebody says that they should be consulted when people want to ask about issues in their wards, how do you consult them? Do you write to them?” posed Thuo.

The trade committee is expected to submit a comprehensive report on the Club.
