The death toll from last night's accident at Mwariki C estate along the Elementaita- Nakuru road has risen to eight.

This is after one more person died at the Nakuru level five hospital this morning.

Medical superintendent Dr. Joseph Mburu said the 14 seater matatu was carrying 21 passengers at the time of the accident that occurred at 7.30pm.

"We have received five bodies while two more were taken to Nakuru county government mortuary," Dr Mburu said.

Two people died on the spot while five died on arrival at the hospital.

He said four patients were treated and discharged while eight are still receiving treatment but could be discharged later today.

The Molo group matatu rolled severally after its front left tyre burst throwing most passengers in a nearby maize plantation.

At Elementaita police station where the matatu was towed, residents milled around to view the wreckage.

Some of the victims' belongings including shoes, head scarves are still inside the vehicle whose entire roof was ripped off while the front and rear bear extensive dents.

The passengers were headed to Nakuru from a burial ceremony of their kin in Kiptangwany when the accident occurred at 7.30pm.

Daniel Maina who was among the first to assist victims at the Nakuru level five hospital said among the patients received in the hospital were three children.

"The doctors at the Nakuru level five hospital acted first especially at the X-ray section to save the situation," said Mburu.
