5 Ways To Cope With An Alcohol And Drug Abusing Parent - ZUMI

There are many ways to help an alcohol and drug abusing parent, but when you’re living in such a situation, its much easier said than done. Are you living under such circumstances? Do you dread going back home after a long day to face unforeseen drama? Are you even living in fear but don’t know where to start?

Here’s what you should do:

Be aware of the current situation in the home, a lot of us live in denial and tend to numb emotions as a coping mechanism. Don’t! It will definitely do you more harm than good. Once you’re aware, you’re at a better place to help your mum or dad.

This might be hard at first, but you need closure, you need to understand why your mother or father is hooked to these substances. Is it stress, a current living condition, or a mental relapse? It could be anything, evaluating the situation helps you understand better and develop empathy.

Depending on your relationship you can either reach out personally to your parent or have an elder do it, be it a family friend or a relative. Just make sure that they don’t feel ambushed because it can escalate and get you into trouble.

Such living conditions aren’t healthy, so taking a breather over the weekend or during the holidays, will be best. Especially if you don’t have any other choice.

Yes! in most cases it’s not the best decision and sometimes you might it. Sure, maybe you can’t afford it now, but if a relative is aware of this, they can accommodate you for a while. You need this for your sanity. It can either be temporary or permanent.

It’s very unfortunate that parents don’t understand the repercussions of their actions. Sure it could be an outcry for help, but if it’s affecting the children it’s definitely not the way to go. For anyone going through this, you’re not alone. Reach out, talk to someone and empathise with your parents.
